India-The 9 Pies Carmine and 9 Pies Blue-Cochin Maharaja Postage Stamps

Illustrated below are some of the 9 pies stamps issued during the reigns of the Maharajas of Cochin. Originally issued in carmine in the reign of Sri Rama Varma the 1st by the reign of Sri Kerala Varma the 2nd (1941-1943) it was issued in ultramarine (see first illustration below).

In the reign of Sri Ravi Varma (Maharaja from 1946-1948) the 9 pies value was issued twice with the Maharaja's head first turned to the right of the stamp edge then re-issued with the head turned slightly left.
