Shown below is the 1934 postage stamp issued in Australia to commemorate the death of Captain John MacCarthur the man who introduced the merino sheep to Australia. The Merino thrived in Australian conditions and became the basis on which the Australian wool industry was founded. The stamp is part of a set of three values (see the 2 Penny value this blog) the 2 Pence (carmine-red/ known in two varieties with the shading of the mountains altered after the first printing), the 3 Pence (blue) illustrated here and the 9 Pence (bright-purple).
