Four Versions of the British One Pound Banknote-1940's-1980's-Illustrated

Illustrated below are the obverse and reverse of 4 issues of the British 1 Pound note. The salmon pink issue is 1940 to 1948, signed by K. O. Peppiatt. Serial number prefixes run from A01D to X96H.

The large green note 1950 to 1955, signed by P. S. Beale. Serial number prefixes run from H37B to L63J

The smaller green note was issued in 1967, signed by J. S. Fforde Serial prefixes run from B11Y to L99Z

The most recent is the smallest signed Somerset  issued  1981 to 1983, signed by D. H. F. Somerset

These were the last 1 Pound notes to be issued by the Bank of England.

 

An Algerian 50 Franc Banknote-1939-French Colonial Banknotes-Illustrated

Below is the obverse and reverse of a 50 franc Algerian banknote. Issued during the colonial rule of France.

The detail shows the date of issue. Just before the outbreak of World War 2.

Illustrated below is the obverse and reverse of a 5 Franc Algerian banknote issued in 1941. The details show the date of issue and the watermark (the head of an Algerian woman in profile).

Four Italian Paper Banknotes of the 1930's-King Victor Emmanuelle the 3rd

Illustrated below are the obverse and reverse of 4 banknotes issued during the reign of King Victor Emmanuelle the 3rd, the last king of Italy. The notes were issued in the 1930's and are denominations of 1,2.5 and 10 lire. The detail is of the 10 lire note showing the date of issue.

Two George the 6th Hong Kong Paper Banknotes-5 and 10 Cents

Illustrated below are the obverse and reverse of two banknotes for the amounts 5 and 10 Cents, the notes were printed (with different portraits of British monarchs) until the 1960's. Earlier issues were printed on both sides but by the 1940's printed on one side only.

Queen Victoria Postage Stamp-The 1878-Plate 16 Sixpence Definitive-Illustrated

Illustrated below is an example of the 1878 issue of the Queen Victoria definitive. In this issue the plate number was indicated in the circle at the corners of the lozenge shape surrounding the portrait. The issue still retained the earlier practice from the  Penny Red of  alphabetic letters in the corners of the stamp. the watermark was a spray of rose.

Some Edward the 7th 1902-1903 Colonial Postage Stamps

Illustrated below are some examples of the Edward the 7th colonial issues, used throughout the Britain and the Empire, a standard portrait with surrounding design and country of origin different. The sideface portrait is that used in all 1902-1903 issues. Illustrated are issues from The Cape of Good Hope, Fiji, Natal, Transvaal and Ceylon.

Edward the 7th-New Zealand 1909 Halfpenny issue-Postage Stamp

Illustrated below is the New Zealand 1909 Halfpenny issue of Edward th 7th. Issued mainly in booklets some were issued as individual stamps and were not part of a more general issue with a different design and portrait to other Edward the 7th definitives of that year.

New Zealand Postage Stamps-Partial Set of the 1940-1940 Commemorative Issue

In 1940 between the 2nd of January and 8th of March a series of stamps was issued in New Zealand commemorating the Proclamation of British Sovereignty. The values were a Halfpenny (blue-green/above), 1 Penny (chocolate and scarlet), Penny Halfpenny (light-blue and mauve), 2 penny (blue-green and chocolate), 2 Penny Halfpenny (blue-green and blue), 3 penny (purple and carmine), 4 penny (chocolate and lake), 5 Penny (pale-blue and brown), 6 Penny (emerald-green and violet), 7 Penny (black and red) 8 Penny (black and red/issued March 8th with the same design as the 7 Penny value), 9 Penny (olive-green and orange), 1Shilling (sage-green and deep green). (The 7 Penny (black and red) is more highly valued lightly used)

New Zealand-George the 6th Definitives-1947-1952-Plate Varieties

Illustrated below are three of the higher values of the 1947-52 George the 6th New Zealand definitives. the values shown are the 1 Shilling (red-brown and carmine), 1 Shilling and threepence ((red-brown and blue) and the 2 Shilling (brown-orange and green). Two different portrait plates were used during the issue which can be seen plainly in the 1 and 2 Shilling examples (in plate 2 the diagonals of the background were strengthened giving the effect of a more deeply shade background) Some of the issue was also overprinted for official use with the type 4 overprint (joined cross bars on the "f") as shown on one of the 1 and 2 Shilling values.

New Zealand Dependencies-2 Early Postage Stamps

Illustrated below are two stamps. No 1 is the 1 Penny (black and carmine-red) of Rarotonga issued in 1920 when the island was a dependency of New Zealand. It shows the Wharf at Avarua. The stamp is more highly valued lightly used than mint.

The second example is the Cook Islands 6 Pence "White Tern or Torea" this was issued between 1896 and 1900 in values of  a halfpenny to 1 Shilling. During the printing some of the values were re-issued with slightly different colours. The sixpence shown below was issued in purple in 1898 and again in 1900 in bright purple, this is the 1900 issue. Also more highly valued lightly used.

Coins of Different Shapes

Most coins are issued as round but many have been issued in different shapes. The obverse and reverse of some of the shapes are illustrated below. Coins have been issued in diamond and triangular shapes, with 12 and seven sides, with scalloped edges and with holes in their centre.

 

Four Old Types of Stamp Albums

Illustrated below are 4 old stamp album types. The earliest perhaps being the "Invincible" from the 1930's.

The "Wyndham" from 1940's New Zealand. The "Stirling" from the 1950's made in Britain and the "Blue Riband" also made in Britain in the 1960's.

Illustrated below are some of the 1909 issue of Edward the Seventh definitives from New Zealand. The set consisted of eight values from 2 penny (mauve) to 1 Shilling (vermilion) issued in 1910. Below are the 2 penny (mauve), 3 penny (chestnut), 5 pence (brown)-(issued in 1910) two examples of the 8 pence (indigo-blue) and 1Shilling (vermilion)
