Cape of Good Hope-1904-Edward the 7th Definitives-Halfpenny and 1 Penny Values-Illustrated

Illustrated below are two of the values in the 1904 Cape of Good Hope Edward the 7th  definitives,the Halfpenny (green) and 1 Penny (carmine). The set consisted of  nine values, Halfpenny (green), 1 Penny (carmine), 2 Penny (brown), 3 Penny (magenta), 4 penny (olive-green), Sixpence (bright mauve), 1 Shilling (yellow-ochre) and 5 Shilling (brown-orange). They are unusual in that the set is only known in used condition.

Australia-1888-89-New South Wales-8 Pence Lyrbird-With Official Perforation-Illustrated

Below is an example of the State of New South Wales issue of 1888-89 8 Pence Lyrebird. Part of set commemorating the centenary of the state (See 1 Shilling issue, post this blog) This example has an official perforation of New South Wales. I have placed black card under the stamp on illustration 2 to make the perforation clearer.

Below is illustrated the 1930-32 design of Canadian Postage Due issue. (See previous post for 1906). the main difference in design is the reversed leaf motif on the sides of the design.

Illustrated below is an example of the design for the 1906 issue of Canadian postage due. (See next post for the 1930-32 design). The main difference between the 1906 and 1930 issues is the leaf motif along the side of the design is reversed.

Australia-1935 Anzac Gallipoli Commemorative Postage Stamp Set-Illustrated

Below are the two values of the Australian 1935 Anzac Commemorative stamp issue. The issue commemorated the 20th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings during World War 1. The set consisted of two stamps the 2 Penny (scarlet) and the 1 Shilling (black).

Illustrated below are the two values of the Australian postage stamps commemorating the opening of the submarine telephone cable to Tasmania. The values were the 2 Penny (scarlet) and the 3 Penny (blue).

Australia-1934 Centenary of the Death of Capt John Macarther-Partial Set-Illustrated

Illustrated below are two of the values from the Australian issue commemorating the death of John Macarther famous in Australia for introducing the Merino sheep to the country, introducing wool as one of the major agricultural exports of Australia in the following two centuries. The set consisted of a 2 Penny (carmine-red), 3 Penny (blue) and 9 Pence (bright violet). The 2 Penny and 9 Pence are illustrated here. The 2 Penny issue has two varieties (both illustrated here) a lighter and darker version with the darker version more highly valued than the lighter. The difference can be seen in the mountain behind the sheep, the original version with lights and darks the second version almost uniformly shaded.

Australia-The 1934 Centenary of Victoria Postage Stamp Set-Illustrated

Below is the 1934 issue commemorating the Centenary of Victoria, an Australian State. The set had three values the 2 Penny (orange-vermilion), 3 Penny (blue) and the 1 Shilling (black). The design was of an Australian aboringinal looking across the Murray River toward the City of Melbourne. Some varieties of perforation exixt in this set. Originally perforated 10 and a half, this was altered to 11 and a half in August of 1934 due to difficulty in seperating the stamps. The 11 and a half perforations are valued slightly higher than the earlier perforation.

Canada-A 1931 Postage Stamp Honouring George Etienne Cartier-Illustrated

Illustrated below is the 1931 Canadian 10 Cent issue honouring George Etienne Cartier. Born in 1814 in Quebec, Cartier was one of the leading figures in the Confederation of Canada and was largely responsible for gaining French Canadian support for the idea of  French and British unity.

Illustrated below is the 1933 Canadian issue commemorating the peliminary meeting of the Universal Postal Union whereby countries agreed to carry each others mail.

Canada-A Partial Set of 1932 Ottowa Conference Postage Stamps-Illustrated

Illustrated below are two of the values issued for the Canadian Ottowa Conference of 1932. The set consisted of three values, a 3 Cent (scarlet), 5 Cent (blue) and 13 Cent (green). The 2 and 3 Cent values bore the portrait of King George the 5th and the Duke of Windsor (Edward the 8th) when still Prince of Wales. The 13 Cent value was illustrated with an allegory of the British Empire, the figure of Britannia seated between two world globes with the countries of the Empire marked in deeper green.

Canada-Some Queen Victoria Definitives-1898-1902-IIlustrated

Below are  examples of the Canadian Queen Victoria definitves of 1898-1902. The portrait was the same as that used in the earlier1897-98 issue with some differences in the stamp design. Where values were in letters within the oval around the Queen's portrait, in the later printing a value tablet was added at the lower corners of the stamp while retaining the value in letters in the oval. Some of the stamps in the set were printed in different years between '98 and '02 and there is some variety in dies and colours. The 2 Cent was printed in 4 colour varieties including the rose carmine of the 3 Cent value illustrated, the 2 Cent value in 1899 the 3 Cent value in 1898

Illustrated below are two examples from the Canadian 1897-98 issues of Queen Victoria. The set consisted of values ranging from a Half Cent to 10 Cents.

Below are some examples Queen Victoria definitives from Canada. The stamps were printed in Ottowa and Montreal and show a variety of shades and paper types. Printed between the 1870's and 1890's with some values of the same design printed in different colours. Some of the shades are illustrated in the 3 Cent value shown below.

Canada-2 Postage Stamps from the 1908 Tercentenary of Quebec Set-Illustrated

Illustrated below are the 1 Cent value and the 2 Cent value of the 1908 Canadian stamp set commemorating the Tercentenary of Quebec. The set consisted of a Half Cent (sepia), 1 Cent (blue-green), 2 Cent (carmine), 5 Cent (indigo), 7 Cent (olive-green), 10 Cent (violet), 15 Cent (brown-orange), and 20 Cent (dull-brown). The British monarch of the time was Edward the 7th, the 2 Cent value bears his portrait with that of his wife Mary.

Illustrated below is the 1935 Silver Jubilee stamp set of George the 5th. The set consists of a 2 Penny (scarlet), 3 Penny (blue) and 2 Shilling (bright violet). The 3 Penny (blue) and  2 Shilling (bright violet) issues are more highly valued postally used in very fine condition. The King is shown riding the horse "Anzac".

France-The 1871 Ceres Head-Two 25 Cent Postage Stamps-Illustrated

Illustrated below are two examples of the 1871 "Ceres Head" designs(Ceres was the Roman Goddess of plant growth) of the earliest French postage issues. Originally issued in the mid 19th Century. Then re-issued in 1871 during the Franco-Prussian War. The examples show early dot and post office number cancellations used in France at the time.

New Zealand-A 1920 Halfpenny Victory Postage Stamp-Overprint-Illustrated

Below is an example of the Halfpenny Victory stamps overprinted with the value of Twopence. This was done in 1922. As the CDS shows plainly.

Illustrated below are two varieties of the 1920 "Victory" stamp.The design shows "Peace" and a Lion part of a set issued for the end of World War 1. The set consisted of a Halfpenny (green), 1 Penny (carmine-red + bright carmine-illustrated below), 1 Penny/Halfpenny (brown-orange), 3 pence (chocolate), Sixpence (violet) and 1 Shilling (orange-red).

New Zealand-The 1935 George the 5th Silver Jubilee Postage Stamp Set-Illustrated

Illustrated below is the 1935 George the 5th Silver Jubilee stamp set. The set consists of a Halpenny (green), 1 Penny (carmine), and Sixpence (red-orange). The set is more highly valued in a very fine lightly used postally condition.

New Zealand-Queen Victoria Sixpence (Brown)-1896 Postage Stamp-Illustrated

Illustrated is the Die 2 version of the 1896 New Zealand Queen Victoria issue Sixpenny (brown). the design was issued from 1882-1900 and multiple varieties exist. Die 1 was thought be unsatisfactory in some respects, the hair at the top of the head being badly defined. In 1891 advertisments were applied to the back of the issue, the ndiscontinued in 1893. Some colour and paper variations also exist.

The First Ethiopian Postage Stamps-2 Examples-Illustrated

Illustrated below are two of the first postage stamps issued in Ethiopia. A set of seven stamps were designed by the French engraver Louis-Eugene Mouchon. Four bore the portrait of Menelik the 2nd, the ruler of Ethiopia at the time, three bore the heraldic "Lion of Judah" emblem of the Ethiopian state since ancient times. Delivered to Ethiopia in 1893 the stamps were issued in 1895. The two examples below are of the portrait of Menelik.
